I had what I thought was an interesting question sent in to me the other day and that is the topic of this article. The question asked was essentially; out of all of the car buying tips, the car deal negotiating tips, and out of all the dos and dont dos when you are car shopping and ultimately buying, what is the single most important area to have under control as the buyer.

I had to preface my answer by saying that in order to get your best deal when buying a car, there are many pieces to the car buying puzzle. They are all individually important because when you put all the buying processes together they make up your deal. And all of these car buying puzzle pieces are what dealerships are all about. They each represent an opportunity to sell you something and therefore make a profit on that sale.

Having said that, this is a great question and you would probably get many different answers. But, since you asked and I have pondered Ill give you my thoughts.

I would have to say financing. You must take the time to do such things as:

Get and understand your credit report.

Shop around for your financing options and ultimately get yourself pre-approved so you will know the amount, the interest rate you qualify for, and the length of your loan.

If you dont get your financing questions answered and in order, you can literally cost yourself thousands of dollars. So, while all of the other aspects of buying a car are indeed important, such as the price of the new car, what you get for your trade, and all of the research that goes into these areas; you can literally give it all back and much more in the dealers finance department.

If I get all my financing lined up ahead of time, why would I even bother with the dealers finance department?

A Good question; and there are a couple of aspects to the answer. First, once you know what you qualify for (a bird in hand), you can then give the dealers finance manager the opportunity to do even better for you. Secondly, even if you have no intention of using the dealer financing option, youll still have to have a seat in the finance office just to sign all the paperwork. Which means the finance person will do their best to sell you their financing package. So being prepared is the best answer.

If you have your financing in hand and know all your numbers ahead of time, youll be able to fend off the monthly payment approach by the car dealers sales person. Buying a car based on monthly payments is good for the dealer; bad for you.

Also, your financing homework becomes even more important if your credit is less than grade A. Be mindful that just the difference in just a couple of percentage points on your interest rate can represent over a thousand dollars to you during the life of your loan. And if your credit score leaves a little to be desired by potential lenders, you will probably see a wider range of qualifying quotes that you get back. So it is even more important that you get your car financing house in order before you head out to the dealership.

Certainly, financing is but one piece of the car buying puzzle. But, its a big piece. And you can rest assured its a big piece (for potential profit) for the dealer. Many people dont realize that this is yet another area at the dealership that you can and should try to negotiate on the road to getting your best car deal.

If you have done your research and homework to give yourself the best possible chance on the front end of the car buying process (new car & trade-in), dont give it all back on the back end of the deal (financing & insurance F&I) by not knowing what your financing numbers and options are.

For many people, car shopping can be a frustrating, time-consuming and inconvenient experience. The good news is that with a little know-how you can use the Internet to turn what might otherwise be overwhelming into a manageable, even enjoyable experience. The Web is an excellent resource to help reduce the stress of car shopping and increase the likelihood of finding exactly the vehicle you are looking for.

The online shopping search starts with thinking about the basic things you want in a new car. Ask yourself, “Do I want a new, used or certified preowned vehicle?” and “Would I prefer a car, SUV or truck?” It’s also important to ask “Do I have a favorite vehicle manufacturer?” and “If I buy a used vehicle, how important is the vehicle’s current mileage to me?” Narrowing your preferences on at least a few of these items will minimize frustration and help lead you in the right direction.

Next, you need to know where to go. Visit consumer-friendly Web sites such as Edmunds.com, Auto Trader.com and AOL for news, reviews and comprehensive vehicle overviews. The Internet allows you to shop for cars in your area on your own schedule, when you have time, without regard for the dealerships’ hours of operation. Automotive Web sites that allow you to save car listings and searches will help you save even more time, since you can go back to where you left off instead of starting fresh each time you visit.

Once you have reduced your search to a few select vehicles, do a side-by-side comparison of the cars. With just a few clicks, you can quickly compare up-to-date vehicle information and reviews, features and benefits and costs of several vehicles. More information in less time is a bargain any consumer can appreciate.

Want your own customized shopping experience? Automotive Web sites such as AutoTrader.com allow you to personalize your car search. Registered users of the “My AutoTrader.com” function, listed on the company’s homepage, can save up to 10 searches and up to 25 cars in their personal space and refer back to the searches at a later date. In addition, the comparison tool allows you to compare your top three car choices.

If you are in the market for a new vehicle chances are you have been shopping around for the best finance package to fit your car-buying needs. Residents of Canada have several options when it comes to finding the right lender for their car loan and by investing a little bit of time in doing research and comparison shopping they can often cut as much as 1-2 percentage points off their financing.

Auto loans are as a part of the car buying experience as finding the right vehicle itself. In fact, many consumers will often investigate financing options before they begin searching for their new vehicle in earnest. There are a number of factors that influence the rates you will receive when looking for vehicle financing. These include such things as credit rating, length of the loan, down payment and vehicle type. By doing a little legwork up front you can be an informed consumer as you explore your financing options.

First, since auto financing is based on a fixed-interest loan you will be paying the same amount of finance charges no matter if you pay it off early or make regular payments as scheduled. As such it pays to finance the least amount as possible when taking out a loan to buy a new vehicle. Consider making a large down payment, trading in older vehicles or looking at vehicles that aren’t as expensive when car shopping. The money you save in finance charges could very well help you upgrade to a higher model vehicle on your next purchase.

The best source for an auto loan may be your local bank or credit union. Often with established customers they will offer a discount in the interest rate in order to keep your business in-house. Failing that take your search online where hundreds of finance companies will actively compete to get you to sign on the dotted line.

Negotiating, haggling, horse trading, whatever you like calling it, is essential when it comes to buying a car. If you dont partake, for any reason, then youll pay more for the car than you had to. And dont forget, youll be paying interest throughout the life of your loan on an amount that could have been lower.

Negotiating the price of a car puts a lot of people into their uncomfortable zone. But, it really should not; especially today with all of the information available to the consumer. The key to confidence and a higher level of comfort comes in the form of knowledge and research.

Lets get a bit of a jump start on your research with some key points to keep in mind when you have decided that its about time to change your ride.

Since there is so much information available to you, dont try to commit your research to memory; even if you are only considering a couple of choices of vehicles. Take the time to organize your notes into a car buying possibilities folder. Make sure that you take your folder with you to the car dealer. Dont be embarrassed or self conscious about doing this; this is a business transaction and you should treat it as such.

As a rule of thumb, car dealers have a profit margin of about 10 to 20 percent. The 20% is theirs if you pay the sticker price and its 10% for the car dealer if you get closer to the dealer invoice price. Keep in mind if you want a specific car with specific options that you cant find on a dealers lot and you order the car; youll get exactly what you want, but your ability to negotiate the selling price will be greatly diminished.

Dont let emotions or car shopping fatigue get the best of you. If you find the exact car that you want and are ready to become a buyer, keep you thinking and your emotions close to the vest. If you find yourself getting tired and mentally beaten down to where you just want to get this over with take a break or come back another time. Remember, emotionally buying a car or buying when tired and fatigued will probably cost you money. Its important to remember that you have the ultimate trump card. You can always walk out of the dealership at any time. Without you there is no deal and car dealers certainly know this.

The early part of the car buying process is getting competitive prices. This may not be as easy for you as it sounds on the surface. Selling cars is an extremely competitive business for car dealers. They dont like to give out their very best price over the phone or with just a short visit to their lot. They know that no matter what price they quote you, if you take that price a few blocks down the road to the next dealer; of course theyll beat that price (if even by just a few dollars) just to get your business. So, you cant blame them for being a bit protective of what their actual bottom line figure to you may be.

But remember, you control the negotiations. At some point during the car buying process, if you are serious about getting your best deal, you will have to sit down and tell the salesperson straight out that you are a buyer and if they will work with you to put the deal together then a deal may very well come together. Be very serious about this. Get the car salesperson and the dealer excited about selling you car not you getting excited about buying a car from them.

Once the negotiating sleeves are rolled up, youll want to negotiate from the dealer invoice price up. Never, never, negotiate from the sticker price down. And never, never, never (notice the 3 nevers!) negotiate, buy, or otherwise discuss or reveal what youd like your monthly payments to be. DONT even discuss a monthly payment range! Youve done your research. You know the numbers. You know that if you get this car for that price; youll be in budget. Dont discuss this with ANYONE!

And finally as you move closer to closing the car negotiating, dont pay for things you dont need. Everyone at a car dealership is tasked with selling and making profit for the dealer. You will, of course, have to pay for taxes, registration fees, and destination charges. But dont pay for additional delivery charges, handling, marketing, promotional, floor charges, administrative fees, or any other dealer verbiage for things they are trying to add on to the deal. And be sure to say thanks, but not thanks to extras like pin stripping, rust proofing, fabric protection, paint sealant, or any thing else. These are just 99.44 percent pure profit for the dealer. And you sure dont want them in your financial contract where youll even be paying interest on them.

In summary, do your research and put your findings in a folder and use it. Knowledge is confidence and comfort level. Negotiate honestly and reasonably. Dont toss out ridiculous numbers and expect to be taken seriously. You want to be taken as a serious buyer. Dont get emotional or fatigued. If you do, take a break and come back later. Be prepared to spend some time and work getting your best car deal and a good deal you will get.

Buying a new car is a big buying decision, and you want to be sure that you make the right choice.

First of all, you should make a list of what you need your vehicle to do / be / have. For example, when I bought my vehicle, my list included:

– 4 wheel drive
– towing capacity for a bass boat
– a nice stereo
– etc

Making that list will help keep you on track to choose a vehicle that meets your needs. Once you have your list made, you can pretty quickly narrow the options down to several vehicles that have the features you need, and that you like.

Now is where the work begins finding out which vehicle is most likely to give you the most reliable, safe use. Here are several important factors that you should check and consider.

Safety Ratings
Your dealer can probably provide you with safety data on the new cars you are looking at. Remember that there are multiple safety tests front collision, side collision, rollover, etc and you should take every test into consideration.

Reliability Ratings
If you go on MSN or other car websites, you can get reliability ratings on past year’s models based on customer feedback. While there will be variation between years, it should give you some idea of a model’s overall reliability.

User Feedback
If you know people who own the model you are considering buying, ask them for advice. They may not only be able to tell you if they are happy with the car, but give you information on which features are hot and which are not.

The bottom line is: the more data you can gather from different sources, the more likely you are to make the best buying decision. Your dealer is an excellent source of information, but it’s important to gather data from other, un-biased sources, as well.

Happy new car shopping!

Car Parts Getting a Fair Price For Your Vintage Parts

Vintage car restoration could be described more accurately as a passion than a simple hobby little beats the thrill you get after hunting down and fitting that special car part. But passion or no, restoration can be a costly pastime, as sellers understandably try to take advantage of your enthusiasm and get the best price for the part you want so badly. Theres no denying that the right vintage car part is worth a lot to you, but dont get ripped off. Here are a few tips to help you get a fair price for the part you need.

Before you make that trip to the wrecking yard or vintage parts dealer, be sure to do your research. Check online to see what the going rate for similar parts are. Find out how difficult the part youre looking for really is and be prepared to pay a little more for rarer pieces.

Try to find a reputable salvage yard or dealer and ask them what their pricing structure is. While you might be better choosing a seller with a formalized pricing plan some dealers value parts at a percentage of what a new part would cost, for example, while others have a set price for the same part from any car those who are willing to barter might ultimately offer you the chance to make fantastic finds. Compare a number of parts sources if you can, to try to ascertain where you might get the best deal.

When a price structure is not in place, remember not to give away too much your obvious enthusiasm for a particular car part might just jack up the price. Express your interest in the part you want, but dont act as though your life depends upon it: car part shopping can be a treacherous game! The dealer will obviously try to get as much as he can for the part you are after, so bid low, and go up only reluctantly. Play your cards close to your chest, and dont give away anything that might suggest you are willing or able to pay more leave the expensive watch at home!

When you finally agree on a price, be sure you know what you are paying for. Is the casing and so on included? Some yards will charge an extra fee for removal of a part that is still in a car, so ask if you can remove the item yourself. Unless the part is deeply embedded in the existing cars structure, this could save you quite a bit of money, but if the job is complicated you might be best having it removed for you. Saving money pales when personal injury is a real risk! Have fun bargaining, but remember to stay safe.

There are a lot of perks associated with car shopping online with eBay Motors, including the buyer being able to set the price. In addition, automobile insurance is more affordable on used cars and, with an auction, the buyer pays in full and there is no hassle of a monthly payment. If you do plan to shop for your next car on eBay Motors, take a moment to consider the following tips to help get you started on the road to car shopping success.

First and foremost, check with your car insurance company before deciding to purchase a specific car on eBay Motors or anywhere else. If the cost of car insurance is a major deciding factor, then you will want to be clear about the costs before you commit to purchasing. In addition, it may be helpful to know that SUVs carry a higher insurance cost than that of a car. With that being said, the cost of insurance will be less on a used car than if that same model were purchased new.

Request a CarFax report from the seller and, if they do not have one, request the VIN number so that you may obtain a copy directly. This report is something that every potential car owner needs to have. Why? Because it contains the number of previous owners that a particular car has had, information regarding whether or not the car has ever been involved in a flood or other accident and whether or not the title is clear.
