The Saturn Relay is another vehicle that is running under the great big umbrella of General Motors, one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, and comes from the corporations Saturn division. This vehicle, the Saturn Relay has been in production since last year, 2005, and is still being produced presently. When this vehicle was introduced, it actually took the spot and the niche which the Oldsmobile Silhouette (also known as the Buick Terraza) left blank. The Saturn Relay is a minivan and has been made available in one body style only which is a van holding four doors.

The Saturn Relay has been built and mounted on the FF/AWD U body platform. Upon its introduction, it has been equipped with a 3.5 liter LX9 V6 engine. It has been said that its major competition in the world of automobiles include the Chevrolet Uplander, and the Pontiac Montana SV6. Also a competition for this minivan is the Buick GL8 despite the fact that the latter is sold only in China.

The present version of the Saturn Relay holds a wheelbase of 121.1 inches, has a length of 205 inches, 72 inches for its width, stands 72.1 inches tall, and holds a curb weight of 4426 pounds. The minivan also gives interested parties the chance to choose the type of material for its interior which could be a choice between cloth and leather. The exterior colors choices are Forest Green, Black Cherry, Bronzed Pewter, Coastal Gray, Golden Cashmere, Midnight Blue, Polar White, and Silver Pearl. The 2006 Saturn Relay has the capacity to take in seven passengers in its interior. It has also been made available in three trim levels which range from the FWD 2 to the AWD 3.

A great and secure way to maintain a vehicle is by installing only excellent quality parts purchased from reputable auto parts stores. In the past, looking for trusted parts suppliers takes more time and effort. It is a good thing though for at present, the World Wide Web has made shopping for auto parts and auto parts a lot easier. Pssst: Wanna (not) Buy a Stolen Car? 14
Jun
Posted by admin in Cars on 06 14th, 2010

Would you buy a used car–with cash–from someone you just met in the bar, and who walked you down a dark alley to show you the car? Not likely. How about from a well-dressed, friendly, middle-aged man or woman, who placed a classified ad in your local newspaper, and who meets you midday at a restaurant of your choice?

Oops! You may be more likely to be cheated by seller number two. That’s the story of Jennifer Warwa, who bought a minivan and had her mechanic examine it. The mechanic later said how shocked he was that Jennifer had been scammed:

“Because I met the gentleman who was selling the vehicle. Very clean cut. In his fifties. Very soft spoken…. And he went with her to get it inspected. There was just no sign that was the kind of person he was” the mechanic told CBC’s Marketplace.

A few months later, Jennifer got a phone call from the police. They said she had purchased a stolen minivan, and they were coming to seize it. She was so upset, she tried to hide the van from the police. Eventually they caught up with her and she ended up paying for a year and a half for a $5,000 bank loan on a van she could not drive. Ouch!

Jennifer was just one victim in the chain that included the original owner, the insurance company, other consumers whose insurance rates keep rising, and the police, who spend thousands of hours tracking thefts. According to the FBI, a vehicle is stolen about every 25 seconds in the USA, amounting to an $8 billion yearly problem.

Here’s how these scams often work. Thieves target particular cars: for their value, their ease of resale as a whole or in parts, or because they are easier to steal. Years ago, most cars were stripped for parts, including unusual parts such as airbags. But today some thieves are so brash they sell cars through newspapers.

This newer scam is called “VIN cloning”, because the Vehicle Identification Number is stolen from another car. Criminals obtain VINs by copying them from the dash of cars in parking lots–even at dealerships. Some even physically remove the VIN plate from vehicles in auto salvage yards that allow customers to “pick your own parts.” (They do not mean that literally!) The number is used to falsely obtain new ownership documents, or documents are forged. Either way, a cloned VIN allows them to transform stolen cars into pseudo-legal vehicles that can be officially titled and sold. Many thieves work across state lines: cars may be stolen in the East, registered in the Mid-West, then sold in California. Scary!

Here’s what you can do to avoid buying a stolen car:

** Check the VIN on the dash against the VIN in the driver’s door jamb, under the hood, and on the paperwork

** Use the VIN to get the car’s history at carfax.com for about $20

** Ensure title and registration documents match the name and address of the seller

** Is the car from out of state?

** Be suspicious if you must meet a private seller in a parking lot. Better to see that they live at the address where the car is registered

** Has the vehicle recently been transferred?

** Does the seller use a home or work phone number, or just a cell?

** Is the selling price oddly low?

** Be warned that some used car dealers are getting scammed, too

** Pay by certified cheque or money order, not cash.

Keep in mind that most private sellers are not thieves, but rather honest, regular folks like you. And prices do tend to be lower with private sales. So if you follow my advice, you can greatly improve your chances of driving away with a “genuine” used car.

Car Rental for Under 19’s 22
Jan
Posted by admin in Cars on 01 22nd, 2010

In most countries, car hire companies only cater for drivers that are older than 21 or 23 years of age. Even in South Africa it can be quite difficult to get a company that doesnt wrinkle their noses at younger drivers.

Why on earth do we qualify for licenses once we reach the age of eighteen? Ive asked this question numerous times over the years.

I think the fact that its so hard to rent a car if your under-21 can be compared to the same reasoning applied to car insurance. The younger you are the more you pay. And, if you are under 25 then your payments per month are particularly more than someone of lets say 30 years of age.

As far as I know, its because theres a larger risk involved with younger drivers. The high accident rate obtained by some reckless under 21 drivers has caused young drivers from all over immense distress.

For tourists, students and anyone under 21, travelling can be quite an issue. A country like South Africa for instance has barely any form of decent affordable public transport. A private taxi is very highly priced, trains are dangerous and local minivan taxis are generally overcrowded.

Now where will you find reliable, affordable car hire?

Browsing the Internet I found very few car rental sites who considered renting cars to people under 21. Eventually I found one specific site who took under 21s into consideration.

I could barely believe it! A car hire company who trusts someone under the age of 25? Even better- a car rental company who caters for under 21s, under 20s AND under 19s!

I was quickly inspecting the website, trying to find some or other catch somewhere in the text. Nothing. They have one or two specific requirements and thats it.

They even state that they will meet all your car rental requirements and rent you a car thats affordable, reliable and economical. Being economical is quite important as South Africa has been hit by numerous petrol hikes in the last couple of months.

As an added bonus, you can collect and drop off your car almost anywhere in South Africa. Not only do you get unlimited kilometres and insurance, you can also cross the South African border into neighboring countries.

SO if you have a valid drivers license, a clean record and your 18 years or older, you can relax! Whenever you need a car rental in South Africa you will be able to get it. Under 19, 20 or 21s rest assured!

Caliber-ated to Replace the Neon 14
Jan
Posted by admin in Cars on 01 14th, 2010

The Dodge Caliber actually started out as a concept car during the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It has been exquisitely designed so as to fill in the void left by most vehicles. It also is marketed towards no particular target area for it is generally meant for the US market as well as the international market.

Remarking on the concept vehicle, Trevor Creed, the Chrysler Groups senior vice president for design, states, With its bold styling and clever packaging, Caliber is pure Dodge. This concept is a new slant on one of the worlds most competitive segments. The Dodge Caliber concept brings emotion to the C-segment sea of sameness and strongly hints at the future direction of Dodge in the global car market.

Now, making its way to the market is the 2007 Dodge Caliber. It is due to come out in the middle of this year. Dodge says that this vehicle is the effective replacement of the bland and monotonous Dodge Neon. The Dodge Caliber has been made to be a bold sport utility vehicle minivan crossover. It holds a confident and breezy side glass. Its platform is actually the very same one that the upcoming new generation of Mitsubishi Lancers would be using. Its engine is a gas engine that is from the Mitsubishi and Chrysler joint ventures. This SUV minivan crossover features Chryslers first continuously variable transmission, or also known as the CVT. The CVT has been specially designed so as to increase performance and fuel efficiency at the same time. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone. The Dodge Caliber holds five doors.

Another new thing that the Dodge Caliber will be boasting about will be the electronically controlled all wheel drive system. This also optimizes fuel efficiency. This system works on demand and it drives only the front wheels until power to the rear wheels is actually needed. If you are interested in acquiring your own Dodge Caliber, you may have to start deciding first as to what color you would like the Dodge Caliber to come in. Dodge offers a variety of colors for this new vehicle. These new colors are ultimately something that could make the Dodge Caliber unique and very different from the rest of the machines rolling down the streets. The color choices comprise of stone white, marine blue pearl, steel blue metallic, sunburst orange pearl, solar yellow, black, bright silver metallic, and inferno red crystal pearl.

Ball Joints and Your Car’s Suspension System 24
Dec
Posted by admin in Cars on 12 24th, 2009

An important part of your cars suspension system is its ball joints. Made of extra tough steel, ball joints act as the pivot point between two parts: the suspension and your cars tires. Ball joints help support your cars weight and, as is the case with some vehicles, ball joints may be used to help set the alignment. Lets take a closer look at this key component of your cars suspension system.

Enclosed in a steel housing, ball joints are used on the front end of almost every car, truck, SUV, and minivan. As might be expected, ball joints are subject to a lot of wear and tear, so to properly protect them ball joints are housed in an enclosed boot to keep dirt away from the joint assembly.

There are two types of suspension systems that use ball joints. The first is a conventional system that uses an upper and lower ball joint. The second is called a MacPherson strut system that uses a single lower ball joint and an upper strut bearing. No upper ball joint is needed as the upper strut bearing does the job instead.

Maintenance for ball joints has changed over the years for most cars. Many vehicles come equipped with ball joints that are permanently lubed, so lubrication is not necessary nor is it even possible as the pack that holds the lubrication is permanently sealed. When ball joints wear out or are damaged, you can find replacement ball joints that come with lubrication fittings; in this case you would need to lubricate your ball joints on a regular basis as in when you change your vehicles oil.

When performing an inspection of your cars suspension, your ball joints should be looked at too. Have a complete wheel alignment performed and make certain that the ball joints are not worn. If the ball joints wear out and are not changed, you will soon experience uneven tire wear or unreliable steering, such as wandering. Clearly, worn out ball joints are a safety issue that must be tended to and fixed immediately.

Ball joints are developed for the specific make/model of your vehicle. Many models share the same suspension system as other models within the brand, but to be sure check your vehicles repair manual for the right replacement ball joints. Certain manufacturers, such as Moog, develop ball joints for many makes/models and can be used by mechanics that prefer this particular product. Check online to find out more information about Moog ball joints and whether they are right for your car.

Remember: ball joints are an important part of your vehicles suspension system. Annual check ups of the suspension can head off costly problems which can also impact your safety.
