Defense Driving Tips From A Parked Position For The Novice Driver
Leaving a parked position can be quite the hazard, if your not sure of the proper procedure.
You are about to move forward from a parked position. Position youre hands at ten oclock and two oclock on the steering wheel. If you let go of the steering wheel, youre hands should continue to rest on the wheel. Some drivers prefer the 3 oclock and the 9 oclock position. If your driving an automatic, the right hand should not have to go too far to change gears, placing it back to the 2 position. The left hand should slide down the steering wheel without leaving the steering wheel to signal. Place your hand back to the ten position when you finished signaling. One hand on the wheel is not the safe way to drive a vehicle.
Now your ready to drive forward and you have done all the safety checks before you roll forward and signaled out of youre parked position. Safety checks include checking your mirrors and shoulder depending on the direction your pulling out of. If you do not pull out right away after your checks, you will have to recheck again. Keep in mind that you are leaving a parked position and you are hardly moving. Traffic behind you can be moving fast. Check you’re shoulder just before you think you are going to accelerate and glance a second time, after you have looked forward to check you’re path ahead. Checking a second time gives you that option to go back to the brake, in case a vehicle comes around some corner and surprises you. Use youre review mirror as much as possible to avoid this situation.
When youre parked between two vehicles. Position youre vehicle so you are clear of the vehicle in front of you, by inching back far enough. Position the nose of your vehicle forward, in a clearance position ahead of you. When you are on a wide roadway, you typically have a couple of feet without obstructing traffic and cyclists. Make sure you are not entering the nose of your vehicle into a potential hazard! Keep in mind the amount you turned the wheel. If you have cranked the wheel quite a bit. Make sure you do not end up on the other side of the road. To avoid this potential hazard, ease off the gas pedal when out of the parked position and gain control of direction by correcting the steering wheel position.
Reviewing the proper procedure of leaving a parked position from a curb.
(1) Path ahead
(2) Mirrors
(3) Signal
(4) Shoulder check
(5) Path ahead
(6) Recheck shoulder
(7) Proceed when all is clear
The first thing you check is your path ahead to make sure its clear.
Check your mirrors to see if its safe behind you.
Signal to traffic behind to let them know your intentions. (Hand signal if you think other drivers cant see youre signal. Also bring youre hand back in before you start to maneuver the vehicle out of the parked position.)
Glance over to your blind spot just in case another vehicle pulls out from across the road, just before you make the maneuver.
Recheck your path ahead and proceed forward with one more glance over youre shoulder. Do not release the brake pedal until after you have looked forward. A pedestrian may have approached youre vehicle while you were looking the other way.
I hope these defensive driving tips will help you in youre goal in becoming a defensive driver. Have an expierenced driver, or a recognized defensive driving school help you for further instruction on this topic.

Bulletproof Technology for a Brighter Future: The 2006 Honda Accord
For many, the 70s will be remembered for disco music, long collar shirts, the rise of feminism, and the twin peaks of energy crises of 1973 and 1976. It was a time when Americans became introspective about their need for large, loud, inefficient cars. The idea that oil reserves were not endless and technological development was not sustainable without harming the environment ended the age of modernism. The introduction of the Honda Accord in 1976, addressed the prevailing paradigm for a reliable, economical, practical car that was fun to drive and easy to park.
Nearly three decades later, in 2006, we find Honda has nearly perfected the Accord Sedan. Now available as a Hybrid, it posts fuel efficiency of 37 mpg highway; 29 mpg in the city. While these are not as good as those of the Toyota Prius, or even the Honda Civic, they are better than most family cars on the road today. Where the 2006 Honda Accord really shines is in the styling, handling, safety, fuel efficiency and the strong residual department, that are vital components of the success of the Accord in the USA. Additionally, the 2006 Accord builds on the engine prowess expected from the ilk.
If you walk around the outside of the 2006 Honda Accord Sedan, youll notice uncluttered clean lines from front to back, create a sense of mystery and sophistication. The car has a distinctive classy look. The sophisticated front nose incorporates headlights and turn signals into a single unit, enhancing aerodynamics. Step inside the cabin, and youll notice the 2006 Accord lives up to its upper middle class, up-market feel. The sporty steering wheel, instrument cluster and tactile cockpit combine both analog and digital features to good effect. The speedometers numbers are in the drivers line of sight and the audio, climate control, and Satellite Navigation system are grouped logically and within easy reach. The front seats are supportive and comfortable for long journeys, and the rear seats are roomy enough to accommodate two adults or three kids. The new Accord has a refined and feels tailor made for the entire family.
If you are a sporting enthusiast, youll see the 2006 Accord is no slouch in either of its VS, LX, EX iterations, or even the Hybrid. The new Accord rewards the driver with nimble handling and the choice of three engines: the 2.4-Liter, 166 horsepower 4-cylinder engine is standard, the 3.0-Liter, 244 horsepower V-6 is an upgrade, and the 253 horsepower Hybrid is the miracle worker of the trio with plenty of low end torque. The Hybrid enables you can enjoy even greater efficiencies while climbing ramps or merging in traffic. The Hybrids Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) technology is able to turn off three of the engines six cylinders by pausing their fuel injection and keeping the intake and exhaust valves closed. The reduced displacement enhances the mileage and range. Press your foot down, and VCM immediately opens the butterfly valves for quick acceleration that is both smooth and instant.
Going fast is only half the battle, the 2006 Accord is competent athlete, versatile at responding to changing driving situations. Every new Accord has standard daytime running lights; dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags that inflate based on the severity of impact; front side and side curtain airbags designed to prevent injury in side impact collisions; an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to prevent wheel lockup and enhance steering control; front crush zones made from high-tensile steel to absorb and re-distribute energy away from the passenger cabin; side-impact door beams and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) to balance brake loading in hard braking conditions; and on all V-6 models, brake assist to enhance stopping. Additionally, the 2006 Accord has earned the 5-star front crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the highest honor to be bestowed on any car.
The oil shock of 1973 resulted in a profound shift in American culture. It was not uncommon for car owners, during this time to gain access to fuel pumps based on their license plates. Holders of license plates ending in an odd number purchase fuel on odd numbered days only, and vice versa. When the first Accord was introduced nearly 30 years ago, it became an instant sensation. The 2006 Honda Accord represents the manufacturers commitment to drivers, passengers, safety, and comfort. With the MSRP of $18,225 for the new Accord Sedan, and $30,140 for the Hybrid its surprising the more things change, the more they stay the same.

| BMW X3 |
28 Dec |
Ive wanted to write something about BMW X3 especially when I read in some newspapers that X3 is the best sell in Europe. It is a little bit strange rough estimate, with a price almost the same like X5 and with a roguish attitude, but X3 was transformed in a big success.
Most of BMW engines are amazing and Europeans are going nuts when they hear about BMW, much more when the suspension remind us of a limousine. Practically, if we take a good look at the price, we will be able to observe that the only strong and real rival for X3 it is X5. But X3 is more a tall break car than that small SUV on which all buyers are dreaming.
And the fact that the car was receiving a facelift, before the new X5 will be launched is another proof of how much the German constructor care about this car! I dont say that the facelift is very spectaculars, the car only gets to be more aggressive.
The interior is beautiful: the edge, interesting steering wheel, everything let you know that you are in a BMW!
If you want to buy this top car you have to know many other things that under the 3.0 SD capote you will see the newest diesel propeller from BMW. I really think that this engine is something that you cant disagree and it deserves all the credits! And we have to recognize that the constructor worked very hard to obtain this beauty!
X3 3.0 SD gets from 0 to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h. And that because the engine develops 286 hp and a maximum torque of 580 Nm starting from 1,750 rpm. What is more interesting its that the Variable Twin Turbo technology and this stage supercharging (everybody is talking about it) permit that the torque gets to 4,400 rpm without harming the car.
I dont know what do you think, but I surely believe in this car and in its capabilities and performances!

| Bmw 330i 2006 Car Review |
27 Dec |
I have to reveal up front that I own an older 3-series BMW, so I am quite aware of its abilities and drawbacks. And as many different types of cars that I drive, I am always happy to return to my baby. But when I got behind the wheel of the new 330i (Edmunds pricing at $39,184) I could tell that this machine was a sharp step up in performance within a quarter mile.
At my first ride in the drivers seat, I couldnt get over the ergonomics of the steering wheel. Every car has one, and Ive handled a few unusual ones, but my grip has never felt more at home than with this 330i. (Unfortunately, it wasnt a heated steering while like the 7-series, and it was quite cold outside.) Then BMW mates this steering wheel with very precise steering for a sedan-level car.
The German automobiles avoid the low-end torque that American makers design, instead they offer a slower launch, but smoother, linear acceleration. And the silky 6-cylinder engine is particularly noticeable with a manual transmission in this car. BMW finally added a 6th gear for the stick shift, and I say it is overdue. My old one has 50,000 miles and the gearing still makes me look for 6th when I run up through the gears but sadly there are only 5 to be had. Since the 330i generates 255 horsepower, far more than I am used to for daily driving, I may have to upgrade my radar detector.
Yes, the car basics are spectacular engine, ride, steering (even the steering wheel), but the electronics controls are a comical disappointment. Anyone that has driven this car has a story about turning on the turn signals from one side to the other and back again, during a vain attempt to turn them off. I know people in the area gave me a wider berth, thinking I was a confused and lost driver. The turning signal lever doesnt click into place as the rest of the world has come to commonly expect turn signals to function. With the 330i, you tap the signal, such as for passing, and it automatically flashes three times and then turns off. But you can hold the lever a little longer, and you get your normal-action from the turn signal. But on a soft turn, where the signal doesnt turn off, you have to flick it the other way to turn it off. But in the hurry of the moment, if it is more than a flick, then you just indicated from your signals that you are turning in the opposite direction. And this goes back & forth every once in a while until you get accustomed to it.
Other electronic oddities are the Navigation/Radio controls. There are many models of cars where you can intuitively muddle your way to what you want to get done. I couldnt generate that kind of luck while I was driving. My passenger had to repeatedly go through the owners manual that didnt offer much guidance to get the map or radio station the way we wanted. And we didnt even have the added i-drive option that so many customers complain about. Im at a loss to explain the miss-timing of the automatic windshield wipers. I love that Jaguar has this feature down pat, but the 330i wipers were always going too fast or too slow; so kept having to manually adjust the automatic windshield wipers. An electronic improvement over the prior 3-series model is the traction control system. The old model would cut the power to the wheels in an obvious fashion, while this model is a seamless experience of artificially superior driving skill.
So while the driving experience is a quantum level improvement over the last generation change at BMW, their electronics package gives me some hesitation in buying one of these machines. In bumper to bumper traffic, the electronic gadgetry of the 330i becomes more annoying; and only on curvy roads without traffic or law enforcement can you experience the thrill of what this car can offer.

| Appreciating the Lincoln Mark VI |
12 Dec |
For four whole model years, the Lincoln Mark VI lived fully. It was in production starting from the year 1980. Its time to shine on the roads and on the streets was cut short come 1983. The Lincoln Mark VI has been made available in two body styles that comprise of a coupe and a sedan. The coupe held two doors while on the other hand, the sedan held two doors more. The power source for this vehicle was a choice between two capable engines which were the 5.0 liter V8 engine and the 5.9 liter V8 engine. The Lincoln Mark VI was considered to be a part of the whole Lincoln Mark line of vehicles from the Ford Motor Companys luxurious Lincoln division. In truth, this vehicle is more or less a carryover or a reskinned Lincoln Mark V.
Upon the introduction of the Lincoln Mark VI, the vehicle contained only very few changes as compared to its predecessor which was the Lincoln Mark V. In fact, most people noticed that the changes were only small and minor revisions in the design and style. Although people also noticed that the Lincoln Mark VI was crafted and manufactured to be slightly smaller than the vehicle which came before it. The most noticeable among all minor changes were the new headlight covers that the Lincoln Mark VI sported around. The vehicle also was a proud owner of a new steering wheel design. The hallmark opera windows that the Lincoln Mark V had were still continued in the Lincoln Mark VI. Along with these windows were the grille that held a Rolls Royce styling and design; and also the rear tire hump.
The changes made the Lincoln Mark VI look kind of awkward provide not much appeal, and thus it held not much appeal. However, this kind of styling and design has made Lincoln think of a project that would bring the vehicle in the limelight. What it did was it asked four designers to individually design and style a Lincoln Mark VI their way. This brought about popularity to the car. And along with that popularity came the reputation of being one of the most sought after vehicles for vehicle and car collectors.
At Lincoln Parts and Car Parts, one can find the stores offering of a great selection of Lincoln auto parts, accessories, tools, and maintenance supplies like Lincoln Mark VI parts. Interesting parties, Lincoln owners, and aficionados could simply visit Lincoln Parts and Car Parts and they could easily access the huge selection and collection of Lincoln parts and accessories that include a/c condensers, catalytic converters, engine parts, exhaust manifold parts, fuel tanks, mirrors, and radiators among many others. | 2008 Chery QQ: Sneak Peak! |
26 Nov |
Chinas Chery Automotive Group is getting set to import as many as five vehicles into the US starting in the summer of 2007. These 2008 models are reportedly going to be cheaper than competing models in their respective classes, undercutting some models by as much as $10,000 per car. I have been doing a little investigating and have learned more about the Chery QQ, the three door compact that will retail for just $6995. Hold onto your hats as I read off the long list of standard features for its incredible, low price.
Just when you think you have seen everything, along comes the QQ. Reportedly, QQ stands for Quality and Quick as the car is made from remnants of destroyed Soviet tanks that battled with China during a protracted border skirmish in 1970. In addition, the car zips from 0 to 48 before the engine craps out. Oh, well zero to sixty would have been nice, but alas…
Standard features for the QQ will include:
Doors, hood, trunk and roof are all standard; body side moldings will likely be extra. Engine, transmission, radiator, exhaust, and countless other parts will also be included once they are removed from junked Yugos and retrofitted for the QQ.
Optional equipment will likely include a radio, comfortable seats, air conditioning, and perhaps even a rear window defroster. Oh, by the way, General Motors has sued and won a judgment against Chery declaring that the Chery name sounds too close to their Chevy name. Chery has agreed and will likely adopt the Forg name for all cars imported to the US. Stay tuned!

| 2006 Ford Mustang: Retro Cruiser |
20 Nov |
When Ford decided to redesign the Mustang, they opted to incorporate a retro look, much like what was done previously with the Thunderbird. Fortunately, Ford didnt look at the ghastly Mustang II series from the 1970s for a template, instead the US automaker drew upon the second generation Mustangs of the late 1960s for their inspiration. Lets just say that the redesigned Mustang has been nothing short of a sell out hit.
Introduced as a 2005 model, the retro Mustang for 2006 offers only one change: the introduction of a Pony package which is meant to give the car a GT look and feel. Borrowing from the fastback design of the late 1960s, the 2005 model was such a hit that Ford could not keep up with production.
Buyers have a choice between a 4.0L V6 and a 4.6L V8 engine to power the car. With 2+2 seating, 107 inch wheelbase, and a curb weight of just under 3500 pounds, the car cruises down the highway with 210 and 300 horses respectively.
Each engine is mated with a 5 speed manual transmission and a 5 speed automatic transmission is optional for both. 4 wheel disc brakes and optional traction control [standard with the V8] help keep the Mustang under control.
Clothe bucket seats are standard with leather seats optional. All models come with tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power locks and windows, power side mirrors, and air conditioning.
Ford gives buyers a choice between 5 coupe and 5 convertible models with base MSRP starting at $19,810 for the coupe and $24,635 for the convertible.
First year sales of the Mustang were so good that the car sold out by early Spring. In fact, the Mustang dethroned the Chrysler 300 as the hottest car on the market with more than 15,000 Mustangs sold per month. All of this production is from just one factory.
Production for 2006 is certain to be tight and with little incentives available they certainly arent needed the Mustang is likely to continue to have a long waiting list of customers desiring the sporty coupe. Considering that sales across the Ford division are flat, this is good news for an automaker desperately needing a hot seller.
